CUA set to begin action at 2011 NCAA Tournament

WASHINGTON - The 2011 Landmark Conference champion Catholic University Cardinals head to Lakewood, N.J. for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, which begins on Wednesday.  This is CUA's first NCAA Tournament since 1977 and its first-ever appearance in the Division III Tournament.  The Cardinals will match up with top-seeded Kean in the opener.

CUA has had quite an interesting road to the NCAA Tournament.  On April 17 the Cardinals swept league rival Susquehanna in a tripleheader to vault into a tie for first place in the Landmark Conference.  CUA then proceeded to lose nine straight games, five of which were decided by a single run.  The Cardinals rebounded though and won three games in three days to capture their third Landmark Conference championship in the last four years.

CUA is making just its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its first-ever appearance in the Division III Tournament.  In 1977 CUA won the ECAC District II Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time.  The Cardinals went 1-2 in the tourney, defeating Seton Hall before falling to Temple and St. John's.

CUA is 63 of 76 on stolen base attempts this season, which is good for 82.8 percent.  Seven Cardinals have not been caught stealing, led by Marc Hanna who is 6 for 6.  Matt Grieb leads CUA with 14 steals.

The Cardinals led the Landmark Conference this season with a fielding percentage of .954.  CUA committed the fewest errors of any conference team (73) and its 45 double plays are 20 more than the next closest team.

CUA has turned 45 double plays this season, which ranks ninth in America.  The Cardinals average just over one double play per game (1.05), which is good for eighth nationally.  Dave Grear (39), Tim Mierzwa (36) and LJ Travaglia (30) are the Cardinals double play leaders.
