Former hurler Robbett signs on with Ruidoso Osos
WASHINGTON – Former CUA pitcher Billy Robbett ’10
recently signed a contract with the Ruidoso Osos of the Pecos
League. He will report to spring training on May 2 with the
club’s first game slated for eight days later vs. the Roswell
Invaders.
Prior to being signed by Ruidoso, Robbett played for the San Diego
Surf Dogs out of the Arizona Winter League (AWL). The AWL provides
professional baseball players, especially overlooked recent college
grads and just released pro players, a winter instructional league
to be able to compete for pro jobs during spring training, or for
those currently under contract to sharpen their skills and be a
step ahead of other wintering players.
During the winter league season, Robbett went 1-1 in six games
with an ERA of 3.00. He struck out nine batters in 12 innings
of work and earned the win against the Yuma Scorpions on February
7.
The AWL is widely considered the most effective winter pro
baseball developmental league and has had over 200 players from the
first four seasons sign professional contracts with numerous clubs
and teams around the world.
Robbett’s new team, Ruidoso, plays in the Pecos League,
which is an independent professional baseball league headquartered
in Houston, Texas. Six teams make up this year’s
league, including the Alpine Cowboys, Carslbad Bats, Las Cruces
Vaqueros, Roswell Invaders, White Sands Pupfish and the Osos.
This year’s schedule will offer a 68 game regular season.
