CUA grad John Butler promoted to defensive coordinator at Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – John Butler, who played football and basketball at CUA, and later served as an assistant coach with the Cardinals football program, was recently promoted to defensive coordinator at Penn State University. Butler coached the defensive backs and worked with the Nittany Lions' special teams in 2012, his first with the program.
Butler went to Penn State after serving as South Carolina's special teams coordinator and coaching the Gamecocks' spur linebackers. He helped lead USC to a school record 11 wins and earn its first Top 10 finish.
From 2007-10, Butler was the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Minnesota, helping the Gophers earn a berth to the 2008 Insight Bowl. Butler has also coached at Harvard, Texas State, Midwestern State and Catholic University. He got his start in coaching at the University of Texas as a graduate assistant.
