Catholic Falls at Merchant Marine Academy

Kings Point, N.Y. — The Catholic University of America football team was topped on the road by the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action, 62-27.

USMMA's ground attack led them past the Cardinals who's offensive air attack looked strong, but could not keep pace with the rushing prowess of the Merchant Marine.

Catholic was able to take an early lead to answer a touchdown score to start the game, 7-6, but USMMA answered with two touchdown runs to take control and outscored the Cards, 21-6, in the second half.

Freshman quarterback Brady Berger made his first career start and had an impressive showing as he completed 24-of-41 passes for 351 yards, four touchdowns and no turnovers.

Berger connected on throws to eight different receivers with a game-high six to senior Blake Gomez who went for 78 yards.

Gomez was one of four pass catchers with 70-or-more yards. Junior Andrew Lunarola led the way with 82 yards on four catches, while senior Greg Holodak was just behind with 80 yards on three grabs and saw two of them go for touchdowns.

Senior punter Andrew DiNardo was once again strong with six punts for an average of 47.5 yards and a long of 56. He also put three inside the 20-yard line.

Senior linebacker Nick Della Jacono had game highs with 16 tackles and 10 solo stops.

Catholic wraps up the 2017 regular season next Saturday at Maine Maritime.
