1940 Sun Bowl
Arizona State 0
The 1939 Cardinals began the year 6-0 on the strength of their stellar defense, which posted five shutouts en route to a regular season record of 8-1. Catholic University victims included South Carolina, 12-0; Elon, 34-0; Detroit, 14-13; West Virginia Wesleyan, 60-0; Miami (Fla.), 14-0; Tulsa, 13-7; Loyola of New Orleans, 34-0; and Long Island, 35-14. The Cards' lone defeat came to St. Anselm's, 39-13. (scroll down)
Because of its strong showing, CUA was invited to El Paso, Texas to play Border Conference champion Arizona State (then known as Tempe Normal Teacher's College) in the sixth annual Sun Bowl. Playing before a crowd of 13,000 at Kidd Field, the Cardinals and Bulldogs battled to a 0-0 tie.
The teams combined for 23 punts, 13 penalties and four lost fumbles. Tempe was 0-for-7 passing with two interceptions, while the Cards were three of 15 for 16 yards.
Both squads ran the ball fairly well as the Bulldogs picked up all of their 205 total yards rushing, while CUA ran for 182 yards. The score was uncharacteristic because, during the regular season, the clubs combined for 512 points.
"I believe we had the better team," Tempe Coach Dixie Howell told the Associated Press, "and would have won if we had gotten a break at the right time."
Cardinal coach Dutch Bergman countered by telling the AP: "Tempe is a fast, powerful team, but we didn't play our top game by any means. I think we are capable of beating Tempe six days out of the week."
The 1940 Sun Bowl was CUA's last appearance in a postseason bowl game. Because of World War II, the school did not field a varsity football team from 1941-46.
During Bergman's 11-year tenure (1930-40), the Cards enjoyed nine winning seasons and won the 1936 Orange Bowl. He later coached the Washington Redskins to an NFL playoff appearance in 1943. With a record of 59-31-4, Bergman is CUA's all-time winningest varsity football coach.
