|Catholic 34, Emory & Henry 21||Oct. 27, 2001|
WASHINGTON - Senior tight end Damian Richard (Winona, Minn./Cotter) caught five passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns and Catholic picked off Emory & Henry quarterback Shannon Johnson four times as the Cardinals knocked off the Wasps 34-21 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon in front of 2,750 fans on Homecoming at DuFour Field. Catholic defeated Emory & Henry (4-4, 2-2) for the third consecutive year.
Catholic (3-5, 1-3) sprinted out to a 27-7 lead at the half, but sputtered offensively going into a 20-mph wind in the third quarter. Emory & Henry took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 69 yards in nine plays for a touchdown, culminating in a 6-yard run by Eric Satterfield.
After Tim Hartman (Pallotti/Columbia, Md.) intercepted Shannon inside the Catholic red zone with 4:59 left in the quarter, Catholic turned it back over, as Wasps sophomore linebacker Nick Colobro intercepted a pass from senior quarterback Derek McGee (Cherokee/Shamong, N.J.) and returned it 26 yards to the Cardinal 1-yard line. Sophomore running back Dan Hammonds plowed in on the next play to cut the lead to 27-21 with 4:07 left in the third.
After not getting a first down the entire third quarter, Catholic started the fourth quarter with an 81-yard drive, with Richard taking a third-down pass out of the backfield and running 55 yards for the score to give Catholic a 34-21 lead. From there, the defense held Emory & Henry to 63 total yards in 20 plays, including an interception by cornerback James Parker (Landover, Md./Parkdale) in Cardinal territory.
Defensively, Catholic was led by senior defensive back Lonnie Meadows (Archbishop Carroll/Silver Spring, Md.), who posted 17 total tackles, 14 solo, as well as breaking up two passes. The Cardinals posted 12 tackles for loss and sacked Johnson three times.
Catholic opened the scoring with 7:59 left in the first quarter, taking a Wasps punt and driving 90 yards in nine plays, culminating in a 23-yard pass from McGee to Richard. Greg Stokes' (Plymouth Whitemarsh/Lafayette Hill, Pa.) extra point was blocked, leaving Catholic with a 6-0 lead.
Emory & Henry recovered a failed Catholic onside kick at midfield and needed just four plays to get into the end zone as Johnson found Adam Davis twice on the drive, including a 37-yard touchdown pass to give the Wasps a 7-6 lead.
Catholic's answer came in the second quarter, as the Cardinals took a short punt and rode junior running back James Vollono (Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Kensington, Md.) to the 10-yard line. McGee found junior wideout Jim Jankiewicz (St. Joseph's Prep/Philadelphia, Pa.) on the sideline for the score to give Catholic a 12-7 lead.
Davis fumbled on the Wasps' next possession, giving Catholic the ball at the Emory & Henry 32-yard line. After a potential Emory & Henry interception was wiped out on a pass interference penalty, giving Catholic at the 2-yard line, McGee punched it in on second down from 1 yard out to extend the lead to 19-7.
Junior defensive back Denis Campbell (Paint Branch/Silver Spring, Md.) picked off Johnson on the next possession at the 35-yard line, after which McGee hit Richard for a 35-yard touchdown. Following an unsportsmanlike conduct call against Catholic, McGee hit junior wideout Dan Evans (Paul VI/South Riding, Va.) from 18 yards out for the two-point conversion and a 27-7 lead.
Davis led all players in receptions with 11, for 111 yards and the opening touchdown. Johnson was 17-for-35 for 186 yards and four interceptions. Phil Christian led Emory & Henry with 13 total tackles (seven solo), while Colobro had the interception and 12 tackles (six solo).
McGee was 11-for-22 for 182 yards and four touchdowns, while Vollono led all rushers with 32 carries for 102 yards.
