ODAC All-Conference Football Teams Announced

WASHINGTON - Three Catholic University of America senior football palyers received All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference recognition for their play during the 2004 season.

Defensive lineman Brendan Foley (Charlotte, N.C./Page) made the defensive second team while Pat Truxillo (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) and Ryan Parrish (Washington Crossing, Pa./Council Rock) received honorable mention honors.

A rough-and-tumble starter on the  defensive line, Foley was a major contributor on defense over his four-year career. He was named CUA Football's Lineman of the Year in 2004. He had 24 tackles and two sacks on the year.

One of three captains for the football team, Truxillo's versatility served him well as a three-year starter at both quarterback and wide receiver. As a leader in the ODAC, Truxillo ranked fifth in punt returns, sixth in passing average per game, eighth in pass efficiency and ninth in total offense and kick returns. On the team, he was first in scoring and punt returns, second in receiving and kick returns and third in rushing, passing, interceptions and total offense -laying claim to the team's Offensive MVP award.

A three-year starter at defensive back, Parrish wracked up the most interceptions on the team during the 2003 season. This year, he ranked sixth overall in the ODAC in total interceptions and was in the top 35 of all defensemen in tackles. On the team, he was second in interceptions and fifth as a defensive leader. He was named the team's 2004 Defensive MVP.

Dada, Haran Head Catholic University Football Awards

WASHINGTON (Feb. 17, 2005) -- Senior defensive end Aaron Dada (Millersville, Md. /Old Mill) and fifth-year guard Brian Haran (Malverne, N.Y. /Chaminade) won Catholic University's most prestigious football awards last Saturday.

Dada was honored with the Anthony J. Bottoni Leadership Award as CUA's outstanding senior leader. Haran won the Ronnie McManes Award, which is given to the Cardinal football player "who has risen above adversity to excel athletically and academically." Both awards are chosen by the coaching staff.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound Dada recorded 34 tackles last season, including five for loss. He tied for the team lead in sacks with three and added an interception and forced fumble. In 2003, he had 28 tackles (five for loss), two sacks and an interception. He transferred from Lehigh University in 2002.

Haran, who started his last three years at CUA, played for three Cardinal head coaches and five line coaches in five years. He missed most of the 2001 season after his father, James, was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Haran graduated in 2004 with a degree in psychology and a minor in business. He competed as a first-year law student at CUA last season and started at guard.

Anthony J. Bottoni was a former two-year (1998-99) starting right guard for the Cardinals who was killed in automobile collision on Dec. 28, 1999. He came to CUA after a distinguished prep career in football, basketball and track at Watchung Hills Regional High School in his hometown of Warren, N.J. He was an honor roll student and class vice president prior to graduating in 1997.

Bottoni's blocking helped the Cards set a then-school record for season rushing yardage with 2,044 yards in 1999. The team ranked seventh in the nation in scoring offense (40.1 ppg), seventh in total offense (481.5 ypg) and 24th in passing offense (277.1 ypg).

Ronnie McManes, who lived in Hyattsville, Md., at the time of his death in 2001 at age 80, helped to rejuvenate football at CUA by becoming the school's first head football coach in 1965 after a 15-year hiatus. He previously coached football, baseball, basketball and track in Washington, D.C., for the No. 12 Metropolitan Police Boys Club. Among the more noted players he coached were University of Notre Dame President, the Rev. Edward A. "Monk" Malloy, Prince George's Community College Softball Coach Mike Gleason and former Prince George's (Md.) County Police Chief Mike Flaherty.

Here are the other Cardinal football award winners:
