CUA Announces 2009 Football Schedule
WASHINGTON-- After finishing the 2008 season with a 9-2 record (4-2 ODAC) and the ECAC Southeast Bowl Champions, the CUA football team will change only one team in its 2009 schedule.
Opening with Shenandoah, who the Cardinals defeated in 2008 by a score of 23-20 in overtime, the Cardinals will begin the season on the road for four of the first six contests before returning to Cardinal Stadium for three of the final four weeks.
CUA's lone lineup change comes mid-season exchanging SUNY-Maritime for local rival Gallaudet on October 17.
The Cardinals finished the 2008 season with an 18-17 win over Johns Hopkins in the ECAC Southeast Bowl. This marked the first postseason victory for CUA since 1935 when the Cards defeated Mississippi in the Orange Bowl. The Cardinals made only four postseason appearances between 1936 and 2008. In 1968 CUA fell to Fordham in the East Coast Club Championship, and in 1997, '98, '99 the Cards lost in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
In 2008 the Cardinals amassed over 4,000 offensive yards, 48 touchdowns and 32 sacks. The team also averaged 31.5 points per game while allowing only 21.8 ppg.
