Football Falls to Shenandoah 21-3
WASHINGTON -- Senior quarterback Vern Lunsford threw a touchdown and ran for one and Shenandoah University rushed for 213 yards in a 21-3 victory over Catholic University at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday.
Lunsford, who finished 9 of 19 for 97 yards, hit Rico Wallace for a 26-yard TD in the second quarter and then ran in untouched on a 9-yard naked bootleg with 7:57 to go in the third to give the Hornets (1-0) a 14-3 lead. Anthony Cordero concluded the scoring on an 8-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Dylan Knight, making his first start at quarterback, led the Cardinals (0-1) with 60 yards rushing. He guided CUA's only scoring drive, resulting in a 27-yard field goal by Brendan Deluca on the Cardinals' opening possession. Alonzo Cooke caught six passes for 52 yards and returned three kickoffs for 106 yards.
Keone Kyle led Shenandoah with 114 yards rushing, Cordero had 47 and Brandon Hayes 43. The Hornets recovered three CUA fumbles and had an interception in the end zone. Lunsford's brother, Joe, a senior linebacker, recorded 12 tackles (seven solo).
Knight completed 5 of 11 passes for 49 yards. He did most of his damage on the ground, averaging six yards on 10 carries, including a 21-yarder. He split time with junior Matt Cantafio, who was 7 of 13 for 56 yards. He drove the Cardinals to the Shenandoah 11 early in the fourth quarter before he was intercepted by Larry Gibbs.
CUA's Rich Barry rushed 12 times for 53 yards and freshman linebacker Marc McEvoy produced a team-high 12 tackles.
CUA plays at Franklin & Marshall College on Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. Shenandoah hosts Bridgewater College on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
Dylan Knight ran for 60 yards and threw for 49 in his first start at CUA.
