Football Leads Early but Falls to Washington and Lee,
LEXINGTON, Va.-- Rich Barry capped off CUA's opening drive with a 1-yard run just over two minutes into the contest, but CUA (0-5, 0-2 ODAC) fell to Washington and Lee (2-4, 1-1 ODAC) Saturday, 28-14.
For the second game in a row, the Cardinals converted their first possession into points, but the offense fell silent for the remainder of the half as CUA punted three times and missed a field goal on their fourth possession.
Washington and Lee, led by Jonathan Clemo (23 for 137 yards), gained 316 yards on the ground adding only 30 yards through the air. CUA ran for 139 yards, and was 16-28 with one interception for 116 yards.
Starting in good field position, Matt Cantafio led the Cardinals down the field on seven plays going 54 yards, scoring in only 2:23 to open the game, but Washington and Lee answered with a 14-play, 66-yard drive that consumed 6:22 and knotted the game at seven.
The Cardinals punted on their next possession but recovered a fumble on the W&L 20 after only two defensive plays. CUA looked poise to take another lead, but an incomplete pass left the Cardinals to attempt a field goal. The ball sailed wide left and put the momentum back behind the hosts. Eight plays and 80 yards later W&L took the lead with 12:36 remaining in the second quarter.
After the break, the hosts scored on their first possession of the half to take a 21-7 lead. The Cardinals answered on their next drive, but failed to find the endzone again giving Washington and Lee a 28-14 win.
CUA will return to action next Saturday as the Cardinals will travel only two metro stops down the red line to Gallaudet University to take on the Bison. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
