Cardinals Stunned by Yellow Jackets
WASHINGTON- Randolph-Macon quarterback Austin Faulkner completed 14 of 20 passes for 156 yards and scored a touchdown to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 31-21 victory over Catholic University at rainy Cardinal Stadium on Saturday.
Thaddeus Scruggs rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown and Steve Matthews added 77 yards as Randolph-Macon (2-2, 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) carried the ball 52 times for 236 yards. The Cardinals dropped to 0-4 (0-1 ODAC).
CUA quarterbacks Matt Cantafio and Dylan Knight, who alternate every two series, combined to go 14 of 24 for 187 yards, two TDs and two interceptions. Cantafio's 2-yard TD pass to Pete LaMacchia on the Cards' opening possession gave CUA a 7-0 lead.
Knight hit Spencer Robinson (three receptions, 42 yards) with a 22-yard scoring pass early in the second quarter to put the Cardinals on top, 14-10. It stayed that way until Jemehl Williams returned a Cantafio pass 14 yards for a score to put the Yellow Jackets ahead to stay, 17-14, with 10:17 to go in the third quarter.
Scruggs rushed for a 16-yard TD later in the quarter, and Faulkner ran in from 2 yards on a draw play with 9:57 remaining to make it 31-10. Faulkner's run completed an 11-play, 86-yard drive.
Rich Barry led the Cardinals with 50 yards rushing. Mike Smith, who ran for 26 yards, caught three passes for 41 yards, and Shayne Dickinson had two receptions for 54 yards. Senior linebacker Joe Mayer recorded a game-high 16 tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss.
CUA is off next week before resuming ODAC play at Washington and Lee on Oct. 10 at 1:30 p.m. Randolph-Macon hosts Washington and Lee on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
