CUA football team set to kick off 2010 season on Saturday night
WASHINGTON – The Catholic University football team is set
to kick off its 2010 season on Saturday evening as the Cardinals
head to Virginia to take on the Shenandoah Hornets inside Sprint
Field underneath the lights. CUA is 3-1 under head coach Dave
Dunn in season openers, including a perfect 2-0 mark on the
road.
Saturday will mark the eighth meeting all-time between CUA and
Shenandoah with the Cardinals holding a slim 4-3 lead.
Catholic University had won three straight meetings prior to last
year’s 21-3 Hornets victory in the nation’s
capital.
Sophomore Greg Cordivari will get the start under center for CUA
on Saturday evening as he makes just his second career start at
quarterback. Cordivari appeared in one game last season and
completed 18 passes for 222 yards.
One of Cordivari’s favorite targets on Saturday evening will
most likely be senior wideout Mike Smith. Smith was
CUA’s leading receiver in 2009 with 40 receptions for 373
yards and one touchdown. The Maryland native was also the
Cardinals’ fourth leading rusher with 73 yards gained on 19
carries, and he even returned punts and kicks throughout the
season.
The 2010 CUA football roster contains three sets of brothers
including, Nick and Vinnie Cortese, Mike and Timbo McGarry, and
Colin and Dylan O’Shea. Cardinals head coach Dave Dunn
recruited all six of the brothers to Washington, D.C.
