The Catholic University football program came into its own in
the early portion of the century, in part due to large numbers of
fans that came through the turnstiles of Brookland Stadium,
beginning with its opening Oct. 4, 1924. After that point, the
program began setting its sights further and further afield and
snagged Arthur "Dutch" Bergman, an assistant coach with the
University of Minnesota, to be the mentor of the Cardinal football
team.
Bergman used his knowledge of football and influence to build a
traveling football powerhouse. The team, which previously had never
been farther than Boston, traveled to Detroit, DePaul, Miami, South
Dakota State and St. Mary's University (San Antonio, Texas) in the
mid-1930s. Bergman also led Catholic to its first two postseason
bowl appearances, the 1936 Orange Bowl
(a 20-19 win against Mississippi) and the 1940 Sun Bowl (a
0-0 tie with Arizona State). Bergman left Catholic when the program
was discontinued in 1941 because of World War II and went on to
scout and later coach the Washington Redskins to a NFL playoff
appearance in 1943. With an overall record of 59-31-4, Bergman is
Catholic's all-time winningest varsity football coach.
