Kyle Smith is in his first season as an assistant coach
with the CUA football program. He will coach the
Cardinals’ quarterbacks. Smith arrives in Washington,
D.C. following a three-year stint as a graduate assistant at his
alma mater, Purdue University.
Smith was the Boilermakers’ tight ends coach most
recently, and prior to that he served as the program’s
quality control grad assistant. In this role, Smith worked
with all phases of the game (offense, defense, special teams), in
addition to aiding with film breakdown and playbook production, and
assisting the academic support staff.
Prior to his time in West Lafayette, Smith was an assistant
defensive backs coach at Hofstra University during the 2008
season. He has also served as the quarterbacks and defensive
backs coach at Deer Park High School in New York.
Smith played his college ball at Purdue from 2001 to 2005,
receiving the Verle H. Campbell Scout Team Award for offense as a
walk-on scout team quarterback in 2001. In 2002, Smith was
awarded a scholarship by former Boilermakers’ coach Joe
Tiller and subsequently moved to safety.
Smith appeared in 41 career games for Purdue, making 18 starts
during that time, and totaled 111 tackles, six pass breakups and a
pair of interceptions. As a junior, he was awarded the
team’s Leonard Wilson Award for unselfishness and dedication
after starting all 12 games. Smith participated in four
bowl games during his career, including The Sun Bowl (2001, 2002,
2003) and the Capital One Bowl (2004).
Prior to coaching at Hofstra, Smith served as a technical
recruiter for TEKsystems. A native of West Babylon, N.Y.,
Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in law and society and
recently added a master’s in education administration from
Purdue. He currently resides in Arlington, Va. with his wife
Becca.
