Smith was the Boilermakers’ tight ends coach most recently, and prior to that he served as the program’s quality control grad assistant.  In this role, Smith worked with all phases of the game (offense, defense, special teams), in addition to aiding with film breakdown and playbook production, and assisting the academic support staff.

Prior to his time in West Lafayette, Smith was an assistant defensive backs coach at Hofstra University during the 2008 season.  He has also served as the quarterbacks and defensive backs coach at Deer Park High School in New York.

Smith played his college ball at Purdue from 2001 to 2005, receiving the Verle H. Campbell Scout Team Award for offense as a walk-on scout team quarterback in 2001.  In 2002, Smith was awarded a scholarship by former Boilermakers’ coach Joe Tiller and subsequently moved to safety.

Smith appeared in 41 career games for Purdue, making 18 starts during that time, and totaled 111 tackles, six pass breakups and a pair of interceptions.  As a junior, he was awarded the team’s Leonard Wilson Award for unselfishness and dedication after starting all 12 games.   Smith participated in four bowl games during his career, including The Sun Bowl (2001, 2002, 2003) and the Capital One Bowl (2004).

Prior to coaching at Hofstra, Smith served as a technical recruiter for TEKsystems.  A native of West Babylon, N.Y., Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in law and society and recently added a master’s in education administration from Purdue.  He currently resides in Arlington, Va. with his wife Becca.
