Catholic University’s football team was among the finest in the nation in the 1930s, and the man most responsible was Head Coach Arthur J. “Dutch” Bergman. He guided CUA to the most victories in its football history (59) and won the second Orange Bowl. Before Bergman built the Flying Cardinals into a nationally prominent program, he helped Notre Dame become a national power as a player. He was a roommate of George Gipp and played under Coach Knute Rockne.

Tommy Whelan, the greatest running back in CUA history, was one of the nation's most exciting players in the early 1930s. One rival coach even compared him to the famed Notre Dame halfback George Gipp. Whelan's touchdowns tended to be long, dazzling open-field runs, and he found the end zone in 15 consecutive games. Originally from the Bronx, N.Y., Kenny had several colleges looking at him, but he ultimately made the choice to go to CUA, over 200 miles away from home. Like several of the students who commit to CUA, he desired to be close to the city of Washington, D.C. and he felt like the Cardinals were a team he wanted to be a part of.
