Elizabethtown, Pa- The No. 18 CUA field hockey team won their third straight game on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Elizabethtown in overtime. CUA's Kim Hermann and Mary Beth Leo scored one each and Elizabethtown's Caitlin Grimes scored one.
Both the Cardinals and Blue Jays were credited with 14 shots on the afternoon. The Blue Jays held an advantage in penalty corners as they were awarded 12 to CUA's four.
In goal for CUA was Megan Comunale who stopped nine shots while Elizabethtown's Lindy Hamp saved seven.
CUA started the first half off strong with Mary Swarthout firing a shot at the 1:58 mark but it was saved by Hamp. The Blue Jays offense controlled the game for the next 13 minutes with five shots and three penalty corners but were unable to score. CUA's next opportunity to score came at the 14:06 mark but Hamp once again made the save. Both teams had several opportunities to score as time winded down but neither team was successfully.
Just like the first half CUA started off strong with Colleen Harwood firing a shot at the 39:15 mark but it was wide. Elizabethtown's first goal came at the 52:04 mark by Grimes who scored off a pass from Kathleen Minerva making the score 1-0.
CUA dominated the next ten minutes as they were awarded two penalty corners and shot twice but both were unsuccessfully. Their offense kept the pressure on and CUA was able to score their first goal of the evening off a penalty stroke by Mirsky making the game tied 1-1.
The second half would end much like the first half with both teams having plenty of opportunities to score but were unsuccessfully forcing the game into overtime.
CUA made four goal attempts in overtime before Leo scored the game winning goal off a pass from Hermann at the 80:04 mark to end the game 2-1.
The Cardinals will return to action on Tuesday, September 13 when they take on Gettysburg at Cardinal Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
