No. 14 Cardinals blank No. 11 Mary Washington 2-0
WASHINGTON – Behind a strong defensive performance, No. 14 CUA improved to 5-1 with a 2-0 shutout of No. 11 Mary Washington on Wednesday evening inside Cardinal Stadium. Kim Hermann and Mary Swarthout took care of the scoring for the Cardinals and Megan Comunale posted a five-save shutout in goal.
The game was a physical affair with plenty of fouls whistled on each side. CUA took the first two shots of the night in the opening 1:15, but the next five minutes saw 13 combined fouls called on the two teams.
A penalty corner by Hermann at the 9:11 mark put the ball into play and Katie Bertrand soon followed with a shot that was blocked. Seconds later Hermann knocked the ball into the back of the cage though, and CUA had a 1-0 lead.
As time moved along the fouls continued to mount for each side, but the Cardinals also looked to increase their lead. Colleen Harwood took a shot at the 16:06 mark that went wide, while Hermann's shot two minutes later was saved.
Mary Washington's final shot of the half came with less than seven minutes to play, but Comunale stuffed Morgan Jones to preserve the 1-0 advantage.
Early in the second, CUA added to its lead when Swarthout scored and the Cardinals were in front 2-0.
That proved to be all the offense that CUA needed with the way its defense played.
The Cardinals limited the Eagles to only six second half shots, with the span between the first and second covering nearly 13 minutes.
With under ten to play, Mary Washington was awarded a penalty corner and seconds later Florence George took a shot, but it was high.
Two more penalty corners were awarded to the Eagles in the final five minutes, but CUA stuffed the first and Comunale saved Jones' shot on the second, keeping the shutout in tact.
The Cardinals were credited with 13 shots on the evening to only 10 for Mary Washington. CUA was awarded nine penalty corners and the Eagles eight, while Comunale finished with five saves and Mary Washington keeper Claire Gianelle stopped six shots.
CUA opens its 2011 Landmark Conference schedule on Saturday when the Cardinals travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to face the Moravian Greyhounds. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
