Cardinals to host Eastern in NCAA Tournament 1st Round
WASHINGTON – CUA has learned its NCAA Tournament fate, and the Cardinals will host a first round game on Wednesday, November 9 vs. Eastern University inside Cardinal Stadium. CUA captured its first-ever conference championship on November 5, while the Eagles won their fourth straight league title that same day.
CUA won its first conference championship with a 5-1 victory over Drew on Saturday, which propelled the Cardinals to their first-ever NCAA Tournament. CUA is 16-1 overall and was ranked tenth in last week's NFHCA Coaches Poll.
The Cardinals have not lost at home this season (10-0), and they've won 12 straight games overall, dating back to September 17. CUA is led by freshman Colleen Harwood (14 goals), senior Mary Swarthout (11 goals), freshman Kim Hermann (11 goals) and senior Tracey Scanlon (10 goals).
In goal, first team All-Conference performer Megan Comunale has started 12 games and sent back 57 shots in over 840 minutes of action.
Eastern downed FDU-Florham 3-2 in overtime on Saturday to earn its fourth consecutive Freedom Conference championship. The Eagles enter the NCAA Tournament with a record of 12-8 overall and 6-1 within their conference.
Eastern has won its last five games overall and six of its last seven. The Eagles are led on offense by Yvonne Herbster with 35 points and Brittany Moyer with 12 goals. Defensively, Christin Suetterlein has started 11 games in goal and stopped 41 shots, while Sara Blaylock has sent back 39 shots in the nine games she has started.
The Eagles have made it to at least the Sweet 16 in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments, including last season when they advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to Skidmore by a score of 4-3.
The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the second/third rounds, with CUA's part of the bracket being hosted by The College of New Jersey on November 12 and 13 in Ewing, N.J. The host Lions will take on the winner of the William Smith vs. Washington & Jefferson first round game, while the CUA – Eastern winner will go up against Lynchburg.
