CUA gets 2011 season underway this weekend at home
WASHINGTON – Only two days remain until the CUA field hockey team gets its 2011 season underway. The Cardinals have been in preseason mode for over a week now with their sights firmly set on Friday's opener. Following a program record 17 wins last season, CUA is looking for similar success this year.
CUA returns three All-Conference performers off of last year's squad, including Mary Swarthout, Tracey Scanlon and Catherine Mirsky. Swarthout and Scanlon were also All-Region performers, giving CUA a trio of talented performers to rely upon.
Those three are hardly alone though, with seniors Mary Beth Leo and Erin Thomas joining Swarthout and Scanlon as captains, giving Head Coach Gia Cillizza a strong contingent of leaders to lean upon.
"The captains are doing a really good job of helping to teach, and to lead the way on how things are done. I think they've really helped the freshmen learn a lot."
After a record-setting season in 2010, Cillizza said the Cardinals know what happened last year, but that won't help them win any games this time around. "The 2011 team is aware of what the 2010 team did. Freshmen don't typically talk about championships very much, but they're saying the right types of things that could get us to a championship."
She continued, "With the talent we have, there's no reason why we wouldn't go for that (a championship). It's going to come down to, is everyone on the same page, intensity and chemistry."
CUA will begin the 2011 season on Friday afternoon when the Cardinals host Washington and Lee inside Cardinal Stadium. Start time is slated for 4:30 p.m. On Sunday evening CUA will host Randolph-Macon beginning at 7.
"These two games are against two very good teams; they'll be good matchups for us and will tell us where we are right now."
