Cardinals ride fast start to 3-1 win over Randolph-Macon

WASHINGTON – Behind a three-goal first half CUA ran its record to 2-0 with a 3-1 win over Randolph-Macon on Sunday evening from inside Cardinal Stadium.  The Cardinals out shot the Yellow Jackets 40-4 and had an astonishing 34 penalty corners, to just one for the visitors.  Colleen Harwood, Kim Hermann and Ellie Banholzer, all freshmen, scored for the victorious Cardinals.

CUA went right to work with Mary Swarthout taking the game’s first shot just 53 seconds in.  RMC’s Nicole Woodworth made the first of her 28 saves, but the Cardinals continued to attack.

Harwood took the next two shots for CUA, but one was blocked and the other saved, keeping the score knotted at zero.  Ten minutes later the freshman would not be denied, when she took a perfectly placed feed from Catherine Mirsky and found the back of the cage for a 1-0 Cardinals lead.

The shots and penalty corners continued to mount for CUA and with 25:50 gone, Hermann struck for her first goal when she put a rebound past Northwood for a 2-0 advantage.

With the final seconds ticking off the first half clock CUA refused to take the pressure off and Banholzer eventually scored with no time remaining to send the Cardinals into halftime with a comfortable three-goal lead.

The second half featured more of the same with CUA dominating the game statistically.  The Cardinals were unable to add to their lead, but the defense more than did its part, limiting the Yellow Jackets to just four shots.

Randolph-Macon finally got on the board with under 12 minutes remaining when Rachael Gardner scored off an assist from Lauren Seal, but CUA tightened its defense up from there and earned victory number-two.

Harwood led the Cardinals with 11 shots in the game, while Banholzer, Swarthout and Tracey Scanlon were credited with five apiece.

Seal took a team-high two of RMC’s four shots, while Meredith Young notched a defensive save.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, September 10 when they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Elizabethtown.  Action gets underway beginning at 1 p.m.
