Cardinals selected to defend Landmark Conference crown

WASHINGTON – The CUA field hockey team has been selected to defend its Landmark Conference championship crown from a season ago.  The conference released its preseason poll on Wednesday and the Cardinals sit on top with six first place votes and 60 points.

CUA tied the school record for wins last season with 17, including a perfect 6-0 mark within the Landmark Conference.  The Cardinals went unblemished at home, winning all 11 contests, including two conference tournament games and CUA's first-ever NCAA Tournament game.

The Cardinals return five All-Conference selections from a season ago, including Catherine Mirsky, Colleen Harwood, Maura Campbell, Kim Hermann and Megan Comunale.

Harwood, who was named CUA's first Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year, was joined on the All-Region Teams by Campbell and Hermann.

Juniata placed second in the poll with one first place vote and 41 points, followed by Drew with 33 points and Scranton with 29.  Susquehanna (25), Moravian (16) and Goucher (13) round out things.

CUA opens the 2012 season on Saturday, September 1 with a trip to take on Washington College.  Start time is set for 1 p.m.
