WASHINGTON – The Catholic University field hockey team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Elizabethtown in Elizabethtown, Pa.
CUA scored within the first four minutes of the contest, with Taylor Elliott scoring of off a left side cross from Colleen Harwood three minutes and 52 seconds into the first half. The Cardinals increased their dominance with a goal by Hayley Wright on an assist by Ellen Thornburn five minutes before the conclusion of the first half.
Catholic entered the halftime intermission with 2-0 lead over the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown broke through the Cardinal defense during the second half of action, scoring two goals to gridlock the contest 2-2. Despite CUA's 17 shot attempts in the second half, the visiting birds could not score and the contest was forced into overtime.
Both teams were unsuccessful in the first overtime, as CUA could not monopolize on its nine shot attempts and five corner kicks.
Elizabethtown secured its first win of the season by turning a penalty kick into a game-winning goal during the second overtime of the afternoon.
With the Saturday loss, CUA is now 1-1 on the season.
