Catholic Honors Comunale for National Ranking
WASHINGTON - Prior to the Catholic University basbeball team taking on St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, April 23, CUA Director of Athletics Sean Sullivan, head field hockey coach Gia Cillizza and her assistants Tracey Scanlon and Heidi Lewis honored senior Megan Comunale for her national ranking.
At the conclusion of the 2013 field hockey season, Comunale was ranked as the nation's leader in goals against average with a mere .65 goals per game recorded against her. Her efforts in goal helped the Cardinals reach a final No. 17 NFHCA ranking, the program's first Elite Eight appearance and the squad's third consecutive Landmark Conference Title. She was also named First Team All Conference, First Team All Region and Second Team All American.
Note: 2013 was an outstanding season for the Cardinals. The team (15-6) made its longest NCAA Tournament run finishing in the NCAA Elite Eight. At the end of the season, the team held a No. 17 national ranking, a No. 4 regional ranking, won its third consecutive Landmark Conference title, and made its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Numerous players received individual accolades including: five All-Landmark honorees, three All-Region selections, and three All-American honorees. Off the field, 10 players were named to the conference academic honor roll and 18-of-23 achieved a grade point average above a 3.0.
