CALELLA, SPAIN - For the second time of her career at CUA, head field hockey coach Gia Cillizza fundraised and campaigned to provide her student-athletes with the opportunity of a lifetime, a foreign tour, this time to Barcelona, Spain.
Over the course of eight days, Cillizza, her assistant coaches Tracey Scanlon and Heidi Lewis, and the 23 members of the 2013 Cardinal Field Hockey Team, explored six cities in the Catalonia region of Spain (Barcelona, Girona, Montserrat, Sitges, Tarragona, and Terrassa), participated in three training sessions with the members of the FC Barcelona Hockey Club (Borja and Eduard), toured churches, a monastery, ancient Roman ruins and a Basilica, and played three games against area field hockey clubs (CD Terressa, Atletico Terressa H.C. and Ilhuro H.C.).
While their travels took them between a 30-minute to two-hour radius of Barcelona, the team made their home in Calella, Spain, a quiet beachside town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Along with the hundreds of pictures and videos taken, Cillizza charged members of the team to pair up and blog about their experience from each day, providing a their perspective of the day's exploration and experience in their own words.
Please check out the CUA Field Hockey athletic page in a few days for the complete photo gallery and several video clips, but in the meantime check out the team's blog.
