WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America field hockey head coach Heidi Lewis revealed the Cardinals' opponents for the 2017 schedule on Friday. The Cards open the year and their quest to return to the top of the Landmark Conference and the NCAA Tournament at home against The College of New Jersey on Saturday, September 2 at 2 p.m.
It will be another challenging slate for Catholic as the schedule features numerous teams in the regional and top-20 rankings, a battle against the reigning National Champions, as well as stiff Landmark competition.
TCNJ finished the year as the No. 5-ranked team in the country with a 16-3 record.
Other home nonconference games include Gettysburg (9/5), Misericordia (9/15), Messiah (9/20) Salisbury (10/4) and Ursinus (10/17).
Messiah finished 2016 as the top squad in the country as they down Tufts in the National Championship Game. Salisbury reached last season's final four and finished as the No. 2 team in the nation. Ursinus also earned a NCAA win last year before falling to the Salisbury in the Elite 8. Ursinus finished No. 6 in the rankings.
Catholic's road nonconference slate features Rowan (9/9), Christopher Newport (9/13) and Mary Washington (9/26). Mary Wash was featured in the regional rankings as the No. 6 team in the South.
The Cardinals begin Landmark Conference play on the road at Susquehanna on Saturday, September 23 at 1 p.m. Road league tilts include Goucher (10/11), Moravian (10/14) and Drew (10/21).
The Cards host their first Landmark game on Saturday, September 30 at 1 p.m., against Juniata. It will also be Alumni day for Catholic field hockey with an alumnae game before hand. The Cardinals also host conference foes Elizabethtown (10/7) and Scranton (10/28).
Other featured games include the Wednesday, October 20 showdown versus Messiah, the 2016 National Champions. It will be Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day for the Cards.
Additionally, Catholic's final game of the year against Scranton on Saturday, October 28, comes on Cardinal Weekend and will also be Senior Day.
