WASHINGTON. — The Catholic University of America field hockey team, which was receiving votes in the latest national top-20 poll, took on a tough test in its season opener and were topped by No. 6 The College of New Jersey, 7-1.
TCNJ came out strong with four goals in the first half on 12 shots. Senior goalkeeper Sophia Hamilton made nine saves in the game but could not overcome 24 shots by the Lions.
Catholic was able to get a goal back in the second half as the senior duo of Lizzie Ireland and Rachel Day connected for a score. Ireland sent a long pass from the left side, which Day expertly redirected in for the goal.
TCNJ also found a strong advantage on penalty corners, totaling 15 to Catholic's five, including a 10-1 advantage in the first half.
Catholic will have a quick turnaround and get to stay home in its next game as the Cardinals host Gettysburg on Tuesday, September 5, at 5 p.m.
