Catholic Downs Gettysburg, 4-2

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America field hockey team earned its first win of the season as the Cardinals defeated Gettysburg, 4-2, at Cardinal Stadium on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Katie Anderson enjoyed one of the best games of her young career as she scored twice to pace the Catholic offense. The Cardinals got two goals in the first and two more in the second to secure the win.

Anderson found the back of the cage in the 12th minute as she corralled a loose ball away from the Gettysburg keeper for the score. Less than two minutes later Catholic scored again when senior Marisa Martinelli blasted one in from eight yards out.

Gettysburg got one back in the 17th minute, but the two teams were able to hold each other off the scoresheet until the second half.

Rookie forward Jess Waite scored her first career goal off a rebound less than 10 minutes into the second and provided the gamewinner as Gettysburg had an answer against in the 49th thanks to a hard shot rebound put back in the cage.

Anderson capped her day the final score of the game as she took the setup from junior Hannah Schied and buried it from point blank range.

Catholic outshot Gettysburg 22-15 and 17-7 in shots on target.

Senior goalkeeper Sophia Hamilton earned her first win of the year with five saves.

Catholic also held a strong edge in penalty corners, 13-4.

After two home games to open the season, Catholic hits the road for a two-game swing that starts at Rowan this Saturday at noon.
