Day Leads Catholic to Landmark Win

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America field hockey team won its Landmark Conference opener at Susquehanna thanks to two goals from senior forward Rachel Day which included the gamewinner. With the 4-1 victory, the Cardinals improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the league. 

Day scored just 24 seconds into the game and after Susquehanna tied in the 16th minute, she put Catholic ahead for good in the 34th as she finished the feed from sophomore Katie Anderson for the 2-1 lead.

Catholic tallied two second-half goals as junior Hannah Schied set up rookie Meghan Shallow for her first career goal in the 61st minute. Less than two minutes later it was senior Lizzie Ireland who found freshman Jess Waite for the score.

Senior goalkeeper Sophia Hamilton made four saves as she improved to 6-2 on the year. Senior back Kelly Cousoulis added a complete game effort and a defensive save.

Catholic outshot Susquehanna, 20-10, and 14-3 in the first half.

The Cardinals now travel to Mary Washington for a Tuesday matchup at 4 p.m.
