2000 Season Preview
The return of 10 starters to a team that finished 10-9 last season has coach Lisa Thompson excited about her club's prospects for 2000.
"We have the desire to be the best," Thompson said. "We possess great speed, aggressiveness and pure talent. We have a lot of young, talented players that may surprise many of our opponents."
Sophomore forward Andi Snyder, senior midfielder Meredith McMahon and sophomore forward Steph Roselle return as the Cardinals' three leading scorers from 1999. Snyder paced the squad with 32 points on 15 goals and two assists. McMahon scored 25 points (11 goals, three assists) and Roselle had 24 points (11 goals, two assists). Snyder and Roselle were both named second-team All-South Region last season.
Strong offensive performances are also expected from junior Maggie Mahoney and sophomores Kim Nolen and Anna Gateau.
Senior Beth Brennan (two goals, one assist) is a strong force in the midfield whose great stick work and agility allows her to beat her defender. She was named second-team All-CAC as a sophomore. She is joined by junior Courtney Halter and senior Trish Cassidy (five goals).
"Our midfield is experienced, talented and well-conditioned," Thompson said. "Beth, Courtney and Trish are three of the top leaders of this team."
Halter garnered second-team All-CAC honors in 1999.
"Courtney not only has great athleticism, but her desire motivates her teammates to reach their peak performance," Thompson said. "She is fast, aggressive and makes quick decisions on the field."
Juniors Aileen Gambescia, Rebekah Dunbar and Sondra Pires will team with sophomore Anne Keane to lead the defense. "The defense has a great ability to communicate with one another," Thompson said. "These girls possess confidence and poise, and have a lot of speed and endurance."
Sophomores Katie Iannacone and Nikki Brewer give the Cardinals strength and experience at goalkeeper. Iannacone, the primary starter last year, recorded four shutouts with a .773 save percentage and 1.97 goals-against average. Brewer checked in with a .736 save percentage and 2.61 goals-against average.
