Catholic junior Stephanie Roselle, who was one of four Cardinals named All-CAC, scored the game-winner in the ECAC semifinals against Washington College.
WASHINGTON - Catholic had its 2001 dream season come to an end as the Red Hawks of Montclair State defeated the Cardinals 1-0 in the final of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship. The Cardinals set team records for victories (16) and win streak (12) during the 2001 season. The Red Hawks' Trisha Winkle was named the MVP as she posted an eight-save shutout against the high-powered Catholic offense.
Montclair's Lea Smith took hold of a cross from teammate Andrea Ulicny and slammed the ball in the net past a diving Katie Iannacone (Havertown, Pa./Villa Maria) in the 31st minute to give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead just before the half. Iannacone finished with seven saves.
In the second half, Montclair (15-4) almost had itself a 2-0 lead, but MSU's Laura Popes found the post with her shot from the left side midway through he second half.
Catholic held a 17-7 penalty corner advantage and took 11 corners in the second half, but could not figure out the MSU defense and keeper Winkle.
The Cardinals (16-4) had one last chance to tie the game as Catholic was awarded a penalty corner with seconds remaining. But junior Sondra Pires' (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) shot was turned away and cleared out of the arc by Winkle to preserve the Red Hawk victory.
