Montclair beats Drew to advance Nov. 3, 2001

WASHINGTON - Senior Laura Popes scored the game-winner five minutes into the first overtime to lift the Red Hawks of Montclair State past Drew University in the first ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship semifinal, 2-1. With the win, Montclair advanced to the final where it will meet Catholic University, which beat Washington College 1-0 in Saturday's other semifinal, on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Red Hawks' Ali Bellino opened the scoring at the 11:16 mark of the first half with her goal on a penalty stroke. After a foul inside the arc, Montclair was awarded a penalty stroke where Bellino put one past Ranger keeper Tara Connelly to make it 1-0.

Drew battled and battled the entire game and were able to lock the game at 1-1 as Kristen Scarpa scored off a pass from the stick of Casey Rogers with just 2:42 left in regulation.

The teams pressed for the go-ahead goal with minutes remaining. Montclair had a golden opportunity to score right before the end of regulation but time expired.

In the overtime, the Red Hawks' Popes picked up a loose ball at the top of the arc and dribbled around to the right side. Her shot found the back of the net and sent Montclair to the finals on Sunday.

Drew goalie Tara Connelly posted nine saves while Montclair keeper Trisha Winkle recorded four stops.
