Salisbury hands Catholic first defeat Sept. 5, 2001

WASHINGTON - Catholic fell behind early and could not catch up to the Sea Gulls of Salisbury in a 5-1 defeat Sept. 5. The game was the conference opener for both teams.

Salisbury got on the board early with Megan Bailey's unassisted tally just five minutes into the game. Tara Webster would be awarded a penalty stroke just three minutes later and put one past Cardinal goalie Katie Iannacone to make it 2-0.

Down 3-0 at the half, Catholic came out strong in the second half, nearly missing on many scoring opportunities. The Cardinals did get an excellent chance to score when junior Sondra Pires (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) was fouled in the arc, resulting in a penalty stroke. Her shot beat Sea Gull goalie Jeanna Fenske to cut the deficit to two goals.

Later in the half, Catholic ran into some bad luck that seemingly burst their bubble as Salisbury's Kristen Seaton was credited with the Sea Gulls' fourth goal after her crossing pass from the right arc hit off a Cardinal stick and into the net past Iannacone.

Catholic returns to action this weekend as they play at St. Mary's in a CAC game at 1 p.m.
