|Cardinals sweep weekend, go 11-1||Oct. 7, 2001|
LEXINGTON, Va. - Catholic continues to rewrite the history books by winning its ninth consecutive contest in a 3-1 win against Washington and Lee on Sunday afternoon.
After a 4-0 week, the Cardinals moved up to No. 15 in the coaches' poll.
Junior Steph Roselle (Tinton Falls, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) scored twice and helped to set up another as the Cardinals moved to 11-1 on the season. Catholic used three first-half goals and held off a late rally. The team has won double-digit games for the first time since 1999. The school record is 13 wins set in 1998.
Sophomore Danielle Deon (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) scored her fifth goal of the season just four minutes into the contest off a beautiful cross off the stick of Roselle at 31:21.
Roselle then scored her eighth tally of the season as she tapped in a pass that went all the way across the arc from senior Deanna Feliciani (Norristown, Pa./Merion Mercy). It was Feliciani's third assist in the last three games and made the score 2-0.
Minutes later, Roselle struck again as she buried home her ninth goal of the year with an assist from junior Sondra Pires (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) at the 13:52 mark of the first half.
The second half saw Washington and Lee keep the play mostly in the CUA end, but could not figure out the Cardinal defense.
Junior goalie Katie Iannacone (Havertown, Pa./Villa Maria) was 1:24 away from her fourth shutout of the year before the Generals' Jessica Lake fired in a loose ball to make it 3-1. Iannacone made 10 saves while her counterpart, keeper Deidra MacLeod, made five saves.
With the loss, Washington and Lee now falls to 2-8 on the season.
The Cardinals return to action as they host Frostburg State on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 4:30 p.m.
