Upset bid falls short as Catholic drops seventh in a row Oct. 21, 2002

WASHINGTON --- Eastern Mennonite's Jonalyn Denlinger scored on a penalty stroke at 5:19 into overtime to foil an upset bid by Catholic as the #14 Royals defeated the Cardinals 3-2, Monday afternoon. The loss was the seventh in a row for the Cardinals.

After a scoreless first half, CUA's Christy Engstrom (Phoenixville, Pa./Springford) made it 1-0 with her second goal of the year with an assist from freshman Jamie Punyko (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) at the 38:58 mark of the second half.

The Royals (12-4) tied it at the 41:12 mark with a goal from Kristin Moyer.

Sophomore Rebecca Clark (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) buried a home rebound for her team-leading seventh goal of the year just two minutes later. Punyko added her second assist.

A goal by Stephanie Derstine in the 57th minute made it 2-2.

Catholic (5-8) dodged a huge bullet with just 17 seconds remaining as senior goalie Katie Iannacone (Havertown, Pa./Villa Maria) stopped a penalty stroke by Denlinger.

Iannacone finished with 13 saves on the day.

In the overtime period, play was mostly in the CUA end as the Royals applied the offensive pressure. Eastern Mennonite was awarded a penalty stroke where Denlinger redeemed herself by beating Iannacone for the win.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, October 25th as they play at The College of Notre Dame (Md.).
