WASHINGTON --- Brynn Maguire scored with 8:45 left in double overtime to lift No.9 (NFHCA) Mary Washington to a 2-1 win over Catholic in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Catholic (1-3, 0-2 CAC) fell behind 1-0 in the first half as the Eagles' Meghan McMahon set up Taylor Vietor off a penalty corner to give Mary Washington the lead.
In the second half, Mary Washington (6-1, 3-0 CAC) was awarded a penalty stroke but CUA goalie Erin Swift (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) made a blocker save to keep a one-goal deficit.
The tables turned as later in the second half, interference by MWC goalie Robyn Lankford caused a penalty stroke for the Cardinals with a chance to tie but Lankford made a kick save on senior Sondra Pires (Dartmouth, Ma./Dartmouth).
Catholic thought it had a goal with about 18 minutes to play as Stephanie Roselle (Tinton Falls, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) dribbled through traffic behind Lankford only to have her shot to the wide open net blocked by the stick of an Eagle defender.
The Cardinals were able to find the back of the net with 5:41 to play in regulation as sophomore Jamie Punyko (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) picked up a loose ball in the arc and notched her second goal of the season.
During the first 7-on-7 overtime, the Cardinals applied pressure on offense, keeping the ball in MWC territory, but came away empty-handed.
Swift and Lankford finished with seven saves each, respectively.
On Sunday, September 28th, Catholic hosts Christopher Newport in non-league action starting at 1 p.m.
