WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 2, 2005) -- Senior co-captain Jamie Punyko and sophomore Michele Repass scored goals to propel the Catholic University field hockey team past St. Mary's College, 2-0, and advance to the championship game of the Capital Athletic Conference field hockey tournament for the first time in the history of the program.
CUA (10-5, 3-2) allowed just four shots in the game and outshot the Seahawks 28-4. Punyko, a midfielder, scored the first goal just three minutes into the game, firing a rebound past keeper Emily Richards for a 1-0 CUA lead.
In the second half, Repass scored on a double assist by Punyko and Kyle Keating on a penalty corner for a two-goal advantage. CUA keeper Irene Jorden preserved the Cardinal shutout with a save.
CUA will head to its first ever CAC field hockey championship on Saturday. The Cardinals face Salisbury University, who beat them 2-1 in the regular season in the last two and a half minutes, at Salisbury, Md. Top seed Salisbury defeated #4 Mary Washington, 3-0 in the semifinals.
