CATHOLIC DEFEATS SEAHAWKS IN CONFERENCE OPENER

St. Mary's City, Md. (Sept. 5, 2005) -- Sophomore forward Erin Kelly scored the eventual game-winning goal off of an assist from sophomore forward Michele Repass on a penalty corner to lift Catholic University to a 3-2 victory over St. Mary?s College in field hockey action on Monday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). The Seahawks fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference with the loss.

The Seahawks opened the scoring in the fifth minute of play when senior midfielder Katie Lange converted a penalty stroke. The Cardinals tied the contest at 1-1 in the 13th minute with their own penalty stroke conversion by junior midfielder Megan Payne. Catholic added another goal when Jamie Punyko scored and unassisted goal just before halftime to give the Cardinals the 2-1 lead.

Catholic increased the lead the 3-1 in the 58th minute of play when Kelly scored on the penalty corner. The Seahawks answered back with a goal from freshman midfielder Emily Smithson in the 61st minute with the assist credited to sophomore forward Alison Femi, but they could not muster another score in the final nine minutes of play.

Freshman goalkeeper Irene Jorden earned the win in net for the Cardinals. Jorden made two saves in the contest. Sophomore Emily Richards took the loss for the Seahawks. Richards allowed three goals while making five saves in the contest.

The Cardinals held an 18-7 advantage in total shots and a 10-3 edge in penalty corners in the contest.
