First-year midfielder Liz MacCormick (Broomhall, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) scored twice within a three-minute span early in the second-half to give Catholic University a 3-1 victory over the University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field. The win was the fourth straight for the Cardinals, now 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the Landmark Conference.

Out-shooting their opponents 20-2 and hitting the target ten times, including a blast in the 61st minute by Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) that found the back of the net, gave the Cardinals their fifth win of the season and opened the 2008 Landmark Conference schedule with a dominating win.

The field hockey team's balanced offensive attack proved to be the key in their commanding 4-0 victory at Randolph-Macon Saturday afternoon. Randolph-Macon's defense was able to hold off CUA for much of the first half, but the momentum shifted once Meredith Chandler (Tiburon, Calif./St. Ignatius) recorded the first goal of the afternoon.

Goodman and Repass Named Senior Athletes of the Year
The Catholic University of America Department of Athletics held its annual Senior Banquet Thursday honoring all graduating athletes and giving out end of the year awards. Male and Female Athlete of the Year honors went to Mike Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) and Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) for their outstanding athletic careers at CUA. The awards are given out annually to a male and female who have impacted their team on the playing field for the last four years.

Eagles Down Cards in Landmark Championship
The Catholic University field hockey squad allowed a goal in the final minutes of the Landmark Conference championship game and it would prove to be their downfall, as the Juniata Eagles (19-2) went on to win 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. CUA controlled much of the game but the Eagles managed to sneak in the final score dropping the Cards to 11-8 on the season.

The Catholic Unversity field hockey squad (11-7) defeated the Goucher Gophers (3-13) in the Landmark Conference semifinal game on Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium. With the victory the top-seeded Cardinals will host the championship game on Saturday against nationally-ranked Juniata who CUA defeated earlier this year.

CUA Outlasts Crusaders in Landmark Finale
The Catholic University field hockey squad (10-7, 5-1 Landmark) earned the number one seed in the Landmark Conference tournament Saturday with a 3-2 victory over the Susquehanna Crusaders in its final regular season game of the year. This is the second year in a row that CUA has been the top seed. CUA defeated nationally-ranked Juniata, who also ended 5-1 in conference, earlier in the season to win the tie breaker.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) has been named the Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts versus Moravian on Saturday. The Catholic University field hockey squad suffered its first conference defeat Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to the Drew Rangers (9-4, 2-1 Landmark) which came down to penalty strokes. The Cards were up early but surrendered the lead late in the half and were later forced into double overtime before moving to penalty strokes to decide the winner. CUA falls to 7-6 win the loss and 3-1 in Landmark conference play.

Ehrmann recorded four defensive saves in the contest to help Catholic University (4-5, 1-0 Landmark) to the 4-1 win.

The Dunkirk, Md., native earned third team honors for her efforts in leading the Cardinals to a 13-8 season. Dinsmore has already been named first team All-Capital Athletic Conference and first team All-NFHCA South Region.

Three members of the Catholic University Field Hockey Team have earned recognition by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The Cardinals had two student-athletes named to the South Region first team and one to the second tying their highest total in program history. The Catholic University field hockey squad (13-7) beat the William Patterson Pioneers 2-1 in overtime Wednesday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. With the win CUA advances to the ECAC semifinal versus the winner of Montclair State and FDU-Florham. This is the second yea in a row that the Cards have moved on to the semifinals.

The Catholic University of America field hockey team placed seven players on the all conference team the Capitol Athletic Conference announced Wednesday morning. This is the most the Cardinals have had on the squad since joining the conference. Along with four members of the first team and three on the second team, head coach Gia Cillizza earned Coach of the Year honors and freshman Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md.,/Archbishop Spalding) was named the CAC Rookie of the Year.

The Catholic University field hockey squad was hoping for lightening to strike twice this season against the powerful Salisbury Sea Gulls. After beating the Gulls 1-0 in the regular season the one and two seeds faced off in the CAC Championship Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. This time, however, the result was different as Salisbury won 3-1.

Sampson’s Goal Sends CUA to CAC Championship
Freshman Melissa Sampson (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) has not been a prolific scorer for Catholic University field hockey (12-6) this season. The midfielder has only taken ten shots on the year and started as many games. On Wednesday afternoon, however, Sampson’s high-powered shots were enough to take down the Mary Washington Eagles (12-7) and advance her team to the CAC final for the second year in a row.

This weekend marks the beginning of a pressure-filled time of year for the Catholic University fall athletic teams. CUA Victorious in Triple Overtime
After on hundred minutes of play, no winner could be determined in the Catholic University (9-6, 5-1 CAC) St. Mary’s College of Maryland (11-4, 4-2) field hockey game Saturday afternoon at DuFour Field. With neither team able to penetrate tough defenses, the game was sent into penalty strokes. After five players shot for each team, the score was 2-2 forcing a sudden victory penalty stroke situation. This deadlock was finally broken when Megan Payne (Elkton, Md./Elkton) hit her stroke and CUA keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) saved Kaitlin Anderson’s shot with her glove giving the Cards the 1-0 victory.

Freshman Carley Walko (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) scored two goals in the Cardinals (8-6) 2-0 win over the Villa Julie Mustangs (4-9) Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals dominated the offensive play as they have been doing all season outshooting the Mustangs 27-2. The win was also significant for head coach Gia Cillizza who became CUA’s all-time winningest field hockey coach with the team’s win over York last week.

Unfortunately for the Cards, two goals by the Captains in the last three minutes of play would spoil the game losing 2-1. With a very quiet game by both teams, neither dominated but in the end two defensive breakdowns proved to be two too many.

Hard-hitting #10 Rowan Defeats Cardinals
After a big upset of #4 Salisbury this past week, the CUA field hockey team (6-5) looked to do it again against #10 Rowan (7-4) on Saturday afternoon. But this time the outcome was different with a 3-0 Cardinal loss dropping the team to 6-5 for the season. Freshman goalkeeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was able to stop 15 shots in the game, but the Profs were just too much taking 29 shots.

Cardinals Stun #4 Salisbury
Jayme Dinsmore's (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) goal at 51:55 ended up being one of the most important goals in Catholic University field hockey history. With that one score, the Cardinals (6-4, 2-1 CAC) beat the #4 Salisbury Sea Gulls (9-3, 2-1 CAC) for the first time since 1991 improving the series record to just 2-27-1.

Repass Named CAC Player of the Week
Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) has been named the field hockey Capital Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 1, 2006. Repass led the Cardinals to a 1-1 seven-day total and an overall record of 5-4.

Cardinals Soar Past Yellowjackets
A quick start by Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was the key for #19 CUA field hockey Sunday afternoon at DuFour Field. The senior had three goals in the Cardinals’ 4-1 win over Randolph Macon (4-7) which improves them to 5-4 on the season.

#19 Field Hockey Knocked Off By Eagles
A penalty stoke with 5:21 left in overtime was the nail in #19 Catholic University’s coffin Tuesday night against the Mary Washington Eagles (7-2, 3-1 CAC). The loss dropped the Cardinals to 4-4 for the season, 1-1 in the CAC. The loss was also the fourth in as many games for CUA.

Field Hockey Moves Up To #16
CUA field hockey climbed to #16 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll released Tuesday. The team had started the season ranked #20 after ending 2005 in the thirteenth slot.

#20 Cards Fall to #7 Ursinus
CUA field hockey (4-1, 1-0 CAC), the 20th ranked team in the country, dropped a game to the #7 Ursinus Bears (5-1) Sunday afternoon in Collegeville, Pa. This was the first loss for the Cardinals who had beaten #13 Gettysburg earlier in the week.

#20 CUA Cardinals Shutout Gophers
Catholic University field hockey (4-0, 1-0 CAC) dominated the Goucher College Gophers (1-4, 0-2 CAC) Friday evening in its first conference game of the season. The #20 Cardinals held Goucher to just one shot and one penalty corner which both came in the final minute of play.

With less than a minute to play in sudden-death overtime, #20 Catholic University field hockey (3-0) scored on a penalty corner to lift the Cardinals over #13 Gettysburg College (3-1). The Cardinals earned their top 20 ranking in the first National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll of the season released today.

A penalty stroke with two minutes left looked like it would send the Catholic University field hockey (2-0) game into overtime. But a huge save by goalkeeper Betsy Homan (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) stopped the McDaniel Green Terror (0-1) momentum making the final 2-1.

Cardinals Hold Off Marlins In Home Opener
On a rainy Saturday, Catholic University field hockey played the inaugural game on the university’s new turf field. The result bodes well for the future with a 2-0 win over the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins. Despite the rain and a shaky offense in the second half, the Cardinals came out on top using tough defense to stop every VWU attack.
