CUA Blanked in ECAC Semifinals
Cardinals finish season 13-8
MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The Catholic University field hockey team (13-8) finished its 2006 season with a 3-0 loss to Montclair State in the ECAC semifinals Saturday evening in New Jersey. The Cards were only outshot 7-4 but MSU made its attempts count.
Montclair scored in the eighth minute when Kristen Swartz and Jennifer Tanis went on an open run against just keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding). Swartz put the ball in the cage to go up 1-0.
CUA battled back but gave up a second goal at 45:48 when Jen Soss hammered home a tally off of a penalty corner from the top of the circle, Tanis notched her second assist of the game on the play.
Montclair State put the nail in the coffin when Jenna Gallo scored the final tally at 63:48 to make the final 3-0 and move MSU on to the ECAC Championship game.
The teams were close statistically despite the score. CUA was outshot 7-4 and MSU took nine penalty corners to the Cards' six. Cassilly had four saves for the afternoon.
The Cardinals will lose six seniors to graduation but return some of their top scorers and CAC Rookie of the Year Cassilly in 2007.
