Cardinals Down William Patterson in OT
CUA advances to ECAC Semifinals
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University field hockey squad (13-7) beat the William Patterson Pioneers 2-1 in overtime Wednesday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. With the win CUA advances to the ECAC semifinal versus the winner of Montclair State and FDU-Florham. This is the second year in a row that the Cards have moved on to the semifinals.
William Patterson got on the board first scoring a goal in the 14th minute. Off of a corner, Katie Jo Cipriani took a shot from the left side which was saved by freshman keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding). The rebound came right back to Cipriani who wound up again this time finding the cage to go up 1-0.
In the second half, CUA evened it up early on. Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day School) controlled the ball on the right side of the box surrounded by defenders. She managed to pass the ball to Jayme Dinsmore (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) who sent a rocket through the left side to tie it up. With neither team able to produce another score the game went into overtime tied at 1-1.
CUA wasted no time during the extra period controlling the offense. Finally just four minutes in Michelle Repass (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) received a pass on the left edge of the circle. The junior forward shot it towards the cage and keeper Grace Brown was unable to get a foot on it giving CUA the sudden-death 2-1 victory.
CUA had 12 shots to the Pioneers' six but WPU too eight penalty corners while the Cards attempted five. Cassilly had two saves for the afternoon while Brown registered four.
CUA will now wait to see who wins the Montclair State/FDU- Florham game this evening which will determine who the Cards will play on Saturday.
