#20 CUA Field Hockey Drops #13 Gettysburg in Overtime
GETTYSBURG, PA. (Sept. 12, 2006) -- With less than a minute to play in sudden-death overtime, #20 Catholic University field hockey (3-0) scored on a penalty corner to lift the Cardinals over #13 Gettysburg College (3-1). The Cardinals earned their top 20 ranking in the first National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll of the season released today.
Senior forward Jayme Dinsmore (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) nailed the winning goal off a pass from classmate Megan Payne (Elkton, Md./Elkton) at 84:01.
The teams battled mostly in the midfield during the first half, but Gettysburg kept the pressure on the Cardinal defense winning three penalty corners and scoring with less than five minutes to go until halftime when Bullet senior forward Maura Downey drove a straight shot home off an assist from sophomore Anne Ritter.
After a somewhat lethargic start, the Cardinals came alive with 15 minutes left in the game. At 66:10, freshman midfielder Carley Walko (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) put a rebound in the back of the cage for the Cards' equalizer. Meanwhile, the Cardinal defense held off eight penalty corners -- including one with no time left on the clock -- to keep the game tied.
In seven versus seven, sudden-death overtime, the teams again traded possession and won two corners each before Dinsmore's game winner. CUA sophomore goalkeeper Betsy Homan (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) recorded five saves for the game, while the Bullets' Katherine Corkhill had three.
The Cardinals have traded wins with Gettysburg consistently. In 2005, the Cards won at home and lost to the Bullets on the road in the Mid Atlantic East Coast Athletic Conference tournament.
The Cardinals play next at home on Friday, Sept. 14, at 4:30
p.m. against Capital Athletic Conference foe Goucher College.
