#20 CUA Cardinals Shutout Gophers
Catholic University holds Goucher to just one shot in the game
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 15, 2006) - Catholic University field hockey (4-0, 1-0 CAC) dominated the Goucher College Gophers (1-4, 0-2 CAC) Friday evening in its first conference game of the season. The #20 Cardinals held Goucher to just one shot and one penalty corner which both came in the final minute of play.
CUA came out like a firing squad with twenty shots in the first 35 minutes. Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) scored her first goal of the game at 7:51 off of a dish from Maureen Brady (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) in the middle of a scramble.
Jayme Dinsmore (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) connected on her first tally at 13:15 when Kelly Davies (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) shot from the right side and Dinsmore stuck her stick out to redirect the ball in. Before the Gophers could catch their breath, the Cardinals had made it 3-0 as Davies found the back of the cage on an unassisted blast.
In the second half, the Cardinals did not let up. Repass put her second goal of the day away from the middle of the circle at 36:51. Sophomore Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) piggybacked on the momentum slowly sliding the ball past the keeper a mere one minute later.
Dinsmore knocked in the last score of the evening in the 47th minute to make the final 6-0. Brady assisted finishing with two helpers for the game.
CUA took an incredible 31 shots to Goucher's one and was awarded 16 penalty corners. Gopher keeper Aline Haddad had 13 saves, but neither Irene Jorden (Riva, Md./South River) or Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) registered a save for CUA on account of facing no shots on goal.
The Cardinals now embark on a four-game road trip beginning with Ursinus on Sept. 17. Push back is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
