Goal late in overtime lifts Mary Washington over CUA
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - A penalty stoke with 5:21 left in overtime was the nail in #19 Catholic University's coffin Tuesday night against the Mary Washington Eagles (7-2, 3-1 CAC). The loss dropped the Cardinals to 4-4 for the season, 1-1 in the CAC. The loss was also the fourth in as many games for CUA.
Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) had the Cardinals lone goal early in the game off of an assist of Kelly Davies (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine). The goal was Repass' fourth for the season ranking her second on the squad in goals and scoring.
Mary Washington scored the equalizer at 29:37 in the game when Jena Elliott knocked it past keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) taking the helper from Allison Weckstein.
With both teams unable to break the deadlock, the game went into overtime at a 1-1 tie. After nine minutes back and forth and even a CUA penalty corner opportunity the game was changed by a foul in the circle. This resulted in a penalty stroke for the Eagles by Sarah Healy who converted giving them the sudden victory at 2-1.
Cassilly had seven saves in the start and Eagles' keeper Katherine Brown posted six. The Cardinals were outshot 13-9 and took only four penalty corners to Mary Washington's seven.
CUA will look to get back on the winning track against Randolph-Macon on Sunday, October 1 at DuFour Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
