Homan's Save Propels CUA Over McDaniel
Dinsmore scores two goals for the Cardinals
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A penalty stroke with two minutes left looked like it would send the Catholic University field hockey (2-0) game into overtime. But a huge save by goalkeeper Betsy Homan (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) stopped the McDaniel Green Terror (0-1) momentum making the final 2-1.
McDaniel came out of the gates strong scoring just six minutes into the contest on an unassisted goal by Carolanne Bianco at the top of the circle. CUA returned the favor at 17:26 when Jayme Dinsmore's (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) shot was saved by McDaniel keeper, Erika Wawzyanick. Dinsmore got her own rebound and found the back of the cage to tie it up.
Dinsmore scored the eventual game-winner at 27:47 on a cross from Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville). Repass got a tight ball from the left post, and Dinsmore took a reverse shot making the score 2-1.
The second half was eerily similar to the Cardinal's first game of 2006 with the Green Terror controlling a majority of the offensive play. McDaniel had numerous opportunities to score including three straight penalty corners with 20 minutes to play and two more with 10 left in the contest.
The big play of the game, however, came with just two minutes to go. A scramble in front of the goal resulted in Krissy Carls taking a penalty stroke against Homan. The close-range shot went to the upper left corner, but Homan stuck out her hand protector and saved the tying goal.
McDaniel held the advantage in offensive attacks, but CUA was able to hold on and stop every advance. The Green Terror took 15 shots to CUA's 11 and 15 penalty corners to the Card's six. Homan had nine saves, while Wawzyanick stopped six shots.
The Cardinals will travel to Gettysburg next Tuesday; the game is slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
