Cardinals Outrun Mustangs 1-0
Repass scores lone CUA goal
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University field hockey squad beat the Villa Julie Mustangs (4-10) 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. Michele Repass' (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) long shot hit the back of the cage to give CUA the victory and improve them to 8-6 on the season.
The Mustangs had five shots on goal early in the game before CUA could even notch one. However, after receiving their first penalty corner it was all Catholic University from that point on. Despite dominating the remainder of the half and holding a 14-5 shot advantage, the Cards were unable to score going into the break still stuck at zeros.
In the second half, the Cardinals continued to attack but once again could find the back of the cage. Finally in the 50th minute, Repass received the ball on the left side and weaved to the upper right hand corner of the circle where she fired a high shot into the top left corner that keeper, Kara Zimmerman was unable to get a glove on to make the score 1-0.
With eight minutes to play an injury to a Villa Julie player caused an extended interruption of play and after the break each team had to regroup for the final minutes. VJC had a number of final chances but the Cardinal defense managed to hold it together for the 1-0 win.
CUA outshot Villa Julie 26-5 including a 12-0 deficit in the second half. The Cardinals also had 14 penalty corners to the Mustangs' eight. Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) took the win for CUA in goal with five saves. Zimmerman was awarded the loss but tallied 13 saves in a solid defensive effort.
The Cardinals will travel to Moravian next Saturday for a Landmark Conference match-up beginning at 2 p.m.
