Field Hockey Clinches Post Season Berth
CUA defeats Moravian 3-1
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Catholic University field hockey squad clinched a berth in the Landmark Conference tournament Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over the Moravian Greyhounds (7-6, 2-3 Landmark). Two goals from Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) gave CUA the edge. The Cards improve to 9-6 on the season and 4-1 in conference play.
Repass scored her first goal of the day late in the opening half taking it herself for the unassisted shot. Right before the break, Lynda Kaufman received a pass from Erica Spats and she managed to slide it past Cardinal keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to knot it at one at the half.
The Cardinal offense came out ready to play in the second half outshooting the Greyhounds 9-3. At 47:13, Repass scored her second goal of the game after her co-captain Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) fed her the ball to give CUA the advantage. In the 67th minute Molly Mahoney (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) gave the Cards some breathing room, Dixon was once again on the assist tallying two for the game. With Mahoney's goal the Cards went up 3-1 which would prove the be the final.
CUA outshot Moravian 17-12 and took eight penalty corners which the Greyhounds were awarded seven. Cassilly earned the win for the Cards with six saves for the game and Maura Cox took the loss with eight saves.
The Cardinals will play former Capital Athletic Conference foe, Salisbury on Wednesday at 4 pm at Cardinal Stadium. Salisbury is currently ranked #2 in the nation.
