WASHINGTON - The Catholic Unversity field hockey squad (11-7) defeated the Goucher Gophers (3-13) in the Landmark Conference semifinal game on Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium. With the victory the top-seeded Cardinals will host the championship game on Saturday against nationally-ranked Juniata who CUA defeated earlier this year.

The Cardinals scored midway through the first after taking taking eight unsuccessful shots and dominating the offensive play for the half. Carley Walko (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) fired the ball into the middle from the top left of the circle and Meredith Reape (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) was standing next the goal to redirect it past keeper Aline Haddad to make it 1-0. The Cards added one more one more before the break when Erin Kelly (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) shot and Haddad came out on it which gave Tory Gagliardi (Pilesgrove, N.J./Archmere) an opportunity to slide it in moving the halftime score to 2-0.

The Cards struck early in the second wen Kelly took a barrage of shots less than two minutes in resulting in a CUA penalty stroke which Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) connected on for the score. Repass notched an assist on the next Cardinal goal as she crossed it from the right side to Kelly waiting at the left post taking it to 4-0 which would be the final of the physical contest.

CUA spent the entire game on offense with 21 shots for the game while the Gophers were unable to register an attempt. Haddad had 11 saves for the game and the loss while Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) took the win despite playing just over half the game before she was relieved by Irene Jorden (Riva, Md./South River) who finished it out.

The Cardinals will host Juniata at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday.  The Eagles defeated Drew 2-0 in the other semifinal game on Wednesday.  Game time for Saturday will be determined later in the week.
