Cards Stay Undefeated in Landmark
CUA downs Scranton 2-0 at Cardinal Stadium
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University field hockey squad (6-5, 3-0 Landmark) stayed undefeated in the Landmark Conference with a 2-0 shutout of the University of Scranton Royals (3-9, 1-2 Landmark) Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. On their Parents' Day, the Cardinals put together a solid performance to stay atop the league.
CUA had its first chance to get on the board midway through the first when Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was awarded a penalty stroke after interference by Royals keeper Kristina Goetz on a shot. Repass went high on the stroke to keep the game scoreless. With less than three minutes to go in the first half, Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) finally put the Cards ahead with a shot from the left side into the corner of the goal. The unassisted tally was off of Goetz's previous save. This gave CUA the 1-0 lead at the break.
Early in the second half, CUA struck once again when a second scramble in front of the goal resulted in a penalty stroke. Freshman Abby Banholzer (Hartland, Wis./Trinity Academy) sent the ball to the left corner and Goetz got her stick on it but the ball ricocheted into the cage to give the Cards the goal making it 2-0. The defense stayed strong for the remainder of the game and CUA came away with the 2-0 final.
The Cards spent a majority of the game on offense holding the advantage in shots 18-5 and penalty corners by a narrow margin of 10-9. Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had four saves as well as the win while Goetz took the loss with seven saves. Irene Jorden (Riva, Md./South River) also saw some time in goal playing ten minutes recording no saves.
The Cards will travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Monday for a contest beginning at 4 p.m.
