Three rookies tally first career goals

9/1/2007

ASHLAND, Va. - The Catholic University field hockey team started 2007 out on the right foot with a 5-0 win over the Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon in Virginia.  The game was season opener for the Cardinals who boast a young roster with 15 freshmen.  The rookies made an impact, however, with three notching their first career goals.

The first half was quiet as both teams started out slowly.  Freshman Kendall Petschauer (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) managed the only goal of the half finding the back of the cage off of a pass from Erin Kelly (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding).  Going into the locker room up by one the Cards held just a slight advantage 4-2 in shots and 3-2 on penalty corners.  In goal Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had no saves in the first half while Ashley Crouch notched one.

The second half was a different story as the Cardinal offense began to find the cage.  Kelly scored her first goal of the season at 37:05 off of a pass from senior Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville).  At 43:11 sophomore Carley Walko (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) found Molly Mahoney (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) open by the goal to make it 3-0.  Walko then went at it alone hitting an unassisted score at 50:38.  The last goal was scored half way through the second as Tory Gagliardi (Pilesgrove, N.J./Archmere) assisted on Meredith Chandler's (Tiburon, Calif./St. Ignatius) shot to make the final 5-0.

Cassilly was credited with the win for CUA with one save on the afternoon, Crouch finished with eight saves and the loss.  Irene Jorden (Riva, Md./South River) entered the cage for the final 23 minutes and also had a save.  The Cards dominated the stats overall with 17 shots to RMC's six and nine penalty corners to their four.

The squad will have just a day's rest before suiting up again for a game against Rowan on Monday at 1 p.m., at Cardinal Stadium.
