#9 Captains Sink Cardinals
Cardinal offense struggles to find the back of the net
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Catholic University field hockey squad (1-4) fell in their second game of the season against a ranked opponent. CUA lost 2-0 to the #9 Christopher Newport Captains (5-1) Sunday afternoon in Virginia. Although the defense allowed just one Captain goal per half, the Cards struggled offensively.
Midway through the first half, Diana Golden slid the ball past CUA keeper, Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding), to make it 1-0. Haylie Black was credited with the assist. The CUA defense held on for the remainder of the half and continued to keep the potent offense at bay until 53:12 when Black notched a goal of her own from Ashley Hay off of a penalty corner. This made the score 2-0 which would be the final.
The Captains used the CUA goal as target practice outshooting the Cards 22-1. However, despite the large number of shots most were off target as Cassilly only had two saves for the game. Elexa Nosonchuk got the win for CNU with one save on the day. The Captains also held the advantage in penalty corners 13-1.
The Cards will face former Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary's on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., in Maryland.
